Choosing the right test

Should I choose an individual lab test or a panel?

An individual test checks one marker or question; a panel groups several tests together. A panel is usually the better value: the $129 Wellness Panel includes five tests that cost $49 each on their own. Just make sure the panel includes the tests you want.

When an individual test makes sense

Choose a single test when you need to check one thing, such as A1c for blood sugar or TSH for thyroid function, or when your doctor has asked for one specific result. Check the specimen type, any fasting and the expected turnaround on your center's page before you visit.

When a panel makes sense

Choose a panel when you want a yearly baseline or several related results at once, such as cholesterol, blood sugar and thyroid function together. Compare what each panel includes in the price tables above, then check its preparation steps on your center's page.

Before you visit

What should I know before my lab-testing visit?

Preparation

Fasting or other preparation depends on the specific test selected. Confirm requirements with your center before your visit so your collection can proceed on the day.

Documents

Identification, consent forms or employer and legal paperwork may be required depending on the test type. Drug screening and legal paternity tests typically have additional documentation requirements.

Collection

Different tests require different specimens — blood draw, urine or other samples. Official-use testing such as court-ordered tests may include additional chain-of-custody procedures.

Collection time

Some tests have collection cutoffs earlier than the location's posted closing time. Confirm the latest collection time for your selected test when you contact or book at the center.

Results delivery

Delivery method and any authorization requirements vary by test. Your center will explain how and when results are delivered when you confirm your test.

Payment

Testing is self-pay. Current pricing and accepted payment options — including HSA and FSA cards — should be confirmed directly with your selected location.

The basics, explained

How quickly will I get my lab results? Many results are ready within 24–72 hours, but turnaround varies by test. A same-day collection does not guarantee same-day results.

The selected location can confirm the expected turnaround and delivery method for a specific test.

Who explains my results?

It is your responsibility to review your results with your private physician. Testing information does not replace medical care or professional medical advice.
